Gaining Credibility With Tutoring Clients – Part II

Last week I gave you my first installment about how to gain credibility with your tutoring clients, a topic of much interest to many of our readers. Now it’s time to get even more specific with my Eight Secrets to Gaining Credibility as a Tutor. I hope you will find this useful, especially if you are just starting out:

Eight Secrets to Gaining Credibility as a Tutor:

1.   Know Your Worth:  Regardless of how old you are or how many years of experience you have, you may be just as good or better than someone with more experience or better credentials. If you are a great tutor, then start acting like it and others will know it too.

2.   Don’t Undervalue Yourself:  If you’re a good tutor, then why are you only charging $20 per hour. If you charge one-third as much as a Sylvan Tutor, then you are signaling to your customers that is what you are really worth.

3.   Trumpet Your Virtues:  Don’t be afraid to tell people who you’re a great tutor, and be prepared to back it up with facts. If you don’t tell people how great you are, then how will they know, especially if you are just starting out.

4.   Be Assertive:  If you act like a confident expert, people will accept you as such. However if you come across as tentative, apprehensive or unsure of yourself, then you will never gain credibility or trust from your customers or your students.

5.   Follow-Through:  Now that you’ve learned to talk the talk, you had better walk the walk. The flip side of telling people how great you are as a tutor is that once you’ve been hired, you have to do the job so well that you’re customers will not only hire you back, but tell all their friends as well.

6.   Manage Expectations:  Let your customers know what they can reasonably expect in terms of results and how long this will take to deliver these results. They will respect you more if you promised a B and delivered a B+, than if you promised an A and delivered the same results.

7.   Manage Your Student:  As a tutor, you can’t always be the good guy.  Make sure your student understands his responsibilities, and demand that he delivers on these. Make sure he’s finished his homework, asked the teacher for extra help, or studied properly for the exam.

8.   Manage the Parents:  If you let your student’s parents push you around, they won’t respect you – in fact they may be testing you to see if you’ve got what it takes. If they ask for an update after every session, tell them you will provide a monthly progress report. If they demand quick results, tell them that you will stick to your tutoring plan but that it will take time to yield proper results. If you stand up to the parents they will definitely respect you more.
